Indian Utility Vehicle (UV) manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra rolled out the new Scorpio for the Indian market on Thursday at a starting price of Rs 7.98 lakh (ex-showroom Mumba). As per latest reports, it is now suggested that the Quanto AMT may be on the cards for a late 2014 launch.

First showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo earlier this year, the Quanto will become the first diesel compact SUV to get Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) in the country. Though the rest of the vehicle's mechanicals will be same as the current model, it will now come with a clutchless transmission.

Interestingly, the AMT will not attract a weight penalty unlike conventional automatic gearboxes. In fact, if the weight penalty was applied, it would have aided greater bulk to the already heavy Quanto, which tips the scales at 1.6 tonnes.

Since its inception, the Mahindra Quanto has not been able to put the sales chart on fire. However, with the introduction of the new AMT variant, it may walk away with a fair share, as it would be hailed as r a budget automatic compact SUV for India.
