Police officers in Goa warned against not registering cases of crime against women

September 26, 2014 04:53 pm | Updated 04:53 pm IST - PANAJI:

Goa Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sunil Garg on Thursday warned officers of immediate action if they failed to register complaints of victims of violence against women in Goa.

At a press conference here, Mr. Garg, who took over as IGP a month ago, said there was an urgency to dispelling public perception about poor sensitivity towards women in the police force.

He admitted he was surprised to find very few cases registered in the women police station this year.

When asked to respond to the perceived reluctance of female victims to approach police stations, Mr. Garg admitted police personnel had to be sensitised about the issue and that the task would be taken up at the earliest.

He also urged media to be very careful about facts while reporting crime against women and assured to install a mechanism for verification of information about the crime at police stations.
