HUBLI : Women’s organizations and educational institutions should create awareness on sanitation and convince people to construct toilets in their houses, said opposition leader and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar.
Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Youth Festival of Karnataka State Women’s University (KSWU) at SJMVS Arts and Commerce College here on Thursday, Shettar rued the fact that many families in the country do not have toilet facility at home.

He said that social and religious awareness should be created among people, especially the young generation, to prevent sexual harassment of women. Lauding the services of KSWU, Shettar said an educated woman can bring changes in her family. “Educated women have entered all sectors and proved that they can be good administrators. Women should utilize the opportunity given to them,” he said.
Dr Meena Chandavarkar, vice-chancellor of KSWU, said that the Youth Festival is an opportunity for students to showcase their talent. She said that the university has started its postgraduate centre in Mandya recently and five new courses were started this academic year.
About 450 students from 40 women’s colleges are participating in the three-day festival.
