Several government and private buildings are being razed using heavy bulldozers in Bijapur city following the implementation of the ‘Master Plan’ project to improve civic amenities.

City Municipal Corporation Mayor, Sajjadepeer Mushrif who is ensuring smooth implementation of the longpending project, told The Hindu that so far, there has been no resistance from any private building owner.

“On the contrary, on Thursday, three private building owners gave consent to demolish a portion of their buildings using heavy cutting machines for widening the road”, he said.

Thanking the people for extending support in implementing the project, Mr. Mushrif hoped that all private buildings between Basaveshwara Circle and Shivaji Circle would be demolished within a fortnight if people supported the project.

Of the 16 roads that will be widened, the road between Basaveshwara Circle and Shivaji Circle has been taken up in the first phase. The stretch has 161 buildings, of which 15 belong to the government, which are being demolished first before razing private buildings.

Mr. Mushrif said that most of the buildings and compound walls being razed belong to various government departments including those that belong to BSNL, Gandhi Chowk police station and buildings owned by the Municipal Corporation.

To a question, he said that while demolition work would not take much time, over a month is needed to call for tenders for constructing roads and footpaths on the widened areas.

“Since the Corporation has no dearth of funds, we will make sure that all tender processes are completed in a timebound manner so that they would be no delay in developing roads on the demolished land. We have many other roads also to take up after the first phase of widening of the roads”, Mr. Mushrif said.eom
