A 38-year-old woman, who kidnapped a six-month-old boy from his mother at Marina Beach on Sunday night and attempted to sell the infant, was apprehended by a police team. The child was reunited with his mother.

Zam Bazaar police said the suspect, who identified herself as Nasima, came across Fathima (35) of Kandanchavadi and her infant son on the sands behind the Kannagi statue on the Marina on Sunday morning. Fathima had left her home with her son a few hours before, following a quarrel with her husband.

“The suspect comforted Fathima and offered to take care of her son while she went to the bathroom. The mother returned shortly to find the woman missing with her child. She then lodged a complaint with the Zam Bazaar police,” said an investigating officer.

The police team tracked Nasima, who was later identified as K. Selvarani (38) of Indira Nagar in Kasimedu. She was found at the Triplicane MRTS station on Monday morning with the missing child. Selvarani was arrested and the child was rescued and handed over to his mother.

Police found out that Selvarani had attempted to sell the child and had apparently quoted a price of up to Rs. 50,000.
