Ploughing Fashion: Taking the catwalk to the countryside

FROM Hunter wellies to Hermes bags, it was all happening as style mavens descended on the opening day of the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, Co Laois. On-trend capes and checks were very much in evidence, with eye-catching equestrian-inspired pieces cantering ahead. Faux furs and ace accessories upped the glamour factor as the rain held off. Here are just some of the fashionistas that walked our way.

CALIFORNIA CHIC

JENNY BURKE, 26, on the sponsorship team for Bank of Ireland and a member of the Irish national kayaking team. From California, with an Irish dad, and living in Dublin.

Wearing: Ted Baker turquoise and tan dress from Designer Xchange, Greystones. Two-tone tan wellies, bought in San Sebastian, Spain, teamed with cream knee socks. Studded black Blanco bag, also found in Spain. And the tan? “My own, from Spain too!”

BOHO MEANS BUSINESS

DEIRDRE O’DONOVAN, 55, from Wicklow town. Works in sales and marketing with Wicklow County Tourism.

Wearing: Black and white Bandolera pinstripe suit bought in FIJi boutique, Wicklow. White Oska t-shirt from Oska boutique, Ashford. Black boots from Dunnes’ Stores. Black suede and leather bag by Tanner Krolle, a gift. Oversized pearl and cut stone necklace, Wicklow Pharmacy. Black scarf, was part of an evening dress. “I got up so early this morning I didn’t have time to wash my hair,” laughed Deirdre. “This is my first time at the Ploughing Championships so I didn’t know what to wear. I wanted to be comfortable.”

VINTAGE VIXEN MEETS HIGH STREET QUEEN

SARAH TREACY, 25, from Clonmel, a business graduate with a HR background.

Wearing: Black dress, belt and necklace, all from River Island. Fur gilet from a vintage shop in Alicante, Spain. Michael Kors bag also bought in Spain. Black over the knee boots by Schuh.

“I love fashion and like to have a new outfit for just about every weekend.”

Six-year-old Brandon was cutting a dash in his Tommy Hilfiger shirt, military style coat, jeans and high tops, all from Next, but was too shy to pose.

“He likes tracksuits but I’m always trying to dress him up,” said Sarah.

UTILITY EDGE

NIALL CARROLL, 25, from Carlingford, a mechanic.

Wearing: Barbour jacket from BT. Hollister polo shirt. G-Star denims. Caterpillar boots. “I like casual and dressy looks and enjoy shopping with my girlfriend Shenagh,” he said.
