RAJKOT: A day after a lion was found dead near Junagadh, the body of a three-year-old lioness was found in a farm near Vankiya village of Khambha taluka in Amreli district on Wednesday morning.
The area where the body was found falls near Mitiyala Wildlife Sanctuary.
While preliminary investigation suggests that the lioness died after a fight, forest officials are concerned as the injury marks and other evidence point out to an attack by a lion named Gabbar.
This lion has gained notoriety for showing extreme aggressiveness towards lionesses and killing two cubs in July. The lion was caged and put under observation after it killed the cubs. However, he was released in the wild later.
"If it was Gabbar who attacked the lioness, it is definitely something to worry about as he might kill other females as well. Gabbar had killed two cubs which were reportedly interfering when he was trying to mate with their mother in July," said a senior forest official.
Sources also said that this lioness was seen with a pride of around six in the area.
Forest officials have been trying to trace Gabbar. Sources said he became aggressive after being driven out of his territory by another lion.
