INDORE: Five days ahead of voting in government colleges of the state to decide fate of existing semester system, ABVP on Monday alleged that state government’s decision of seeking referendum only from government college students was an injustice to the students of private colleges.
“Decision on semester system will also affect private college students.
We condemn the government’s decision and request the authorities concerned to give private college students too a chance to vote on the crucial matter,” said ABVP state secretary Rohin Rai.
Department of higher education (DHE) is mulling over continuation of the semester system in higher education and it will take a mandate from government college students on September 29. In last six years, no student could get away with his degree promised in the stipulated course duration.
Courses are stretched by months and even years. Students of BAMS, BHMS and BPT are worst-affected.
Higher education minister Umashankar Gupta reportedly instructed officers of DHE to reconsider on continuing semester system. Going by his orders, the DHE has decided to take a referendum on semester system. Feedback of the students would be discussed by members of coordination committee of higher education chaired by chancellor of the state universities, said sources.
Before 2008, the exams in colleges used to be conducted on annual pattern. But with the University Grants Commission pushing for the six months exam pattern, the state government had implemented the semester system in colleges.
