Cable snap near Agra: Over two dozen trains delayed

BHOPAL: More than two dozen trains in the busy New Delhi-Gwalior railway section were delayed when an overhead electric (OHE) cable near Agra Cantonment station snapped. Incident occurred around 2 am on Wednesday during shunting of Jhansi Passenger Express.
Of the trains affected, around a dozen trains pass through Bhopal station, including Bangalore Rajdhani and Malwa Express that were delayed by seven hours each.
Besides, Dakshin Express, Shri Ganganagar-Naded Superfast Express and Haridwar LTT Superfast Express were delayed by six hours each. Chhattisgarh Express was late by three hours while AP Sampark Kranti Express and Samata Express were delayed by two hours each. Mangla Lakshadweep, Punjab Mail and Sampark Kranti were delayed by more than an hour because of the cable snap, hugely inconveniencing passengers.
Many of the trains were stranded at Jhansi, Morena, Gwalior and other stations and the traffic piled on during the busy morning hours.
According to railway officials of Agra railway division, the down line (from Jhansi to New Delhi) was partially around 7.30 am. However, the up line was restored at 11.45 am.
"We worked on war footing basis as it was a busy section. Still a section was under repair and it would only be done when the traffic is less and we can shut down the line. Around 25 trains, including express, superfast, mail and passenger trains were affected because of the cable snap," said an official from Agra Control Room.
The incident reflects a severe lapse on the part of railways as sources say the pole was very close to the track and during shunting the cable snapped and fell.
