ALAPPUZHA: In a move to put an end to inconvenience caused by stray dogs roaming the streets, and to find them a home, Mararikkulam North grama panchayat has started a noble initiative with support from Animal Husbandry Department (AHD). The local body has started an adoption centre for abandoned puppies at veterinary hospital, Kanichukulanghara.
The adoption centre began functioning on Wednesday and four puppies were handed over to pet lovers at a public function held on the premises of the hospital.
The function was inaugurated by panchayat chief Prabha Madhu. This project is a brainchild of senior veterinary doctor of the hospital, Jayachandra Kammath.
Kammath said they started to collect puppies that are 2 to 4 months old from the streets of the panchayats. “Once the puppies are collected from the panchayat, they will be kept in the hospital’s ward for observation for two weeks. After confirming that they are are not carrying any diseases, they will be sterilized and vaccinated. After that, they will be handed over to pet lovers, who are ready to adopt dogs. In order to adopt a puppy, the adopter should sign an agreement with the hospital. As per the agreement, the puppies should be cared and protected well. Medicines and other treatments will also be provided to the puppies from the hospital. The hospital is having a register in this connection and the details and health conditions of the puppies will be recorded in the register when they bring the puppies for medical aid,’’ said Kammath.
