Firozabad, UP’s 14th municipal corporation

The minimum population for a municipal corporation is 5 lakh, and Firozabad’s population is over 6 lakh.

Opening the doors for more funds for infrastructure development in Firozabad — the Lok Sabha constituency of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s cousin Akshay Yadav  —  the state government has upgraded the Firozabad Nagar Palika Parishad to Nagar Nigam (municipal corporation). Akshay, son of Samajwadi Party general secretary Ramgopal Yadav, was elected MP for the first time from Firozabad in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year.

After approval from the Governor’s office, the Urban Development Department issued notification regarding the creation of Firozabad Municipal Corporation, the 14th in the state.

Since the Firozabad Nagar Palika Parishad was headed by an executive officer with no appointment of any municipal commissioner by the state government so far, Firozabad DM  will be the in-charge of the new municipal corporation.

The state election commission will conduct elections in Firozabad for Mayor as well as corporators (members of the municipal house), alongside the general elections of local bodies in 2017.

Urban Development Department Secretary Shreeprakash Singh said since Firozabad fulfilled all the requisite parameters and conditions required for a municipal corporation, the decision was taken to this effect.

Festive offer

The minimum population for a municipal corporation is 5 lakh, and Firozabad’s population is over 6 lakh.

As the municipal commissioner holds more financial and administrative powers than an executive officer, Mayor holds more financial powers than Nagar Palika Parishad chairman and corporators hold more financial powers than members of the Nagar Palika Parishad. The new officers, elected Mayor and corporators in Firozabad will be able to sanction more funds for the development of the municipal wards.

The state has 630 urban local bodies, 14 municipal corporations (including Firozabad), 193 Nagar Palika Parishads and 423 Nagar Panchayats.

Firozabad will also be able to draw funds in the 13th Finance Commission for development-related works. Staff will be increased as additional municipal commissioner would be appointed there and monitoring of civic services will also be increased.

Other 13 municipal corporations in UP are Kanpur, Agra, Varanasi, Allahabad, Lucknow, Meerut, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Ghaziabad, Moradabad. Aligarh, Jhansi and Saharanpur.

BJP candidates had won as mayor in 10 municipal corporations in 2012.
