Globecomm Senior Scientist to Present Best Practices for Configuring, Deploying and the Suitability of IPsec-based VPN SCADA Security Devices at the ENTELEC 2014 Fall Seminar Series

Globecomm announced today that Alexander Benitez, Senior Scientist for Globecomm subsidiary Comsource, will address the ENTELEC Fall Seminar Series, September 25-26 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Mr. Benitez’s presentation is based on research conducted in Comsource’s ICS/SADA laboratory utilizing the Siemens SCALANCE security modules. Hewill examine the use of IPsec-based Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) from the perspective of a control system engineer trying to move data from the outside plant, into their operations center. The details of setting up an IPsec tunnel, the Phase 1 and Phase 2 negotiations will be discussed, as well as its overall data transport characteristics in light of real-world constraints and conditions such as limited bit-rate, message size, latency and bit-error-rate. Using industry standard references, he will also discuss key management pitfalls, Phase 1 and Phase 2 protocol selection.

The performance of a commercially available IP security device, built specifically for the ICS environment, will also be discussed.

Mr. Benitez has over 25 years of experience in the engineering and analysis of voice and data networks for companies including IBM, MITRE and TASC. His network design experience is bolstered by more than 15 years of experience in the vulnerability assessment of world market switches and other embedded systems. He has led teams in designing, integrating, testing and deploying advanced networks incorporating terrestrial and VSAT links, employing bulk encryption, VPNs, protocol/application acceleration, VoIP, video, firewalls, NIDs, and related network elements.
