RLD chief says snapping power & water supply ‘brazen display of power’

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) disconnected water and power connection to Singh’s residence on September 9.

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh, in the centre of a controversy over vacating his 12, Tughlak Road bungalow, said a few days before water and power connection to his residence were disconnected, he had sought a fortnight’s time to vacate the address.

“The BJP government has come to power and now believes it can do anything. It has forgotten basic things, such as courtesy and respect.

I had informed the government that I would leave by September 24, but then they disconnected water and power. This brazen display of power is unprecedented,” he said.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) disconnected water and power connection to Singh’s residence on September 9.

Reiterating that the bungalow is a symbol for farmers and should be turned into a me RLD, morial to his father, Singh said, “Making memorials for those who have been instrumental in the process of building our nation isn’t a new thing. Just a few months ago, a memorial was made for Babu Jagjivan Ram. Another memorial was made for Kanshi Ram, then why not for my father, former Prime Minister Choudhary Charan Singh?”

Festive offer

“The BJP had won the elections in western UP by indulging in communal politics, using the riots to garner the Jat vote. But their obvious disregard for the community is now showing. People in western UP, who had voted for (Narendra) Modi, are now realising that he was only concerned about his own ‘acche din’,” he said.

NDMC chairman Jalaj Srivastava said the civic agency had not received any request from Singh to convert his 12, Tughlaq Road house into a memorial to his father. “NDMC has not received any such request as all such proposals will have to be routed through the Urban Development Ministry,” he said.

Singh should have vacated the place in the two months he was given after the new government came in, he said.

On steps that can be taken to evict an occupant, Srivastava said the last measures have already been taken, “How can someone live without electricity and water?”
