Ready to retreat but only if Chinese troops do: India

Chumar, where the Indian security forces are at an advantageous position, has seen the worst stand-off in the past four days.

With the build-up along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on the rise, India has proposed to retreat the security forces only if the move is reciprocated from China’s side.

After four flag meetings failed to bring the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the Indian Army to a consensus, India is going to raise this as an option at the next meeting. According to sources, both India and China are objecting to construction of military structures on respective sides of the LAC.

“So far, the four flag meetings have not yielded any result. It is not that we are going to retreat or give up on our claim but a massive buildup has been created on both sides. But there is a condition that we would do so only if it is reciprocated from the other side,” said a senior government official.

The stand-off that has continued for almost a fortnight now has worsened in the past three days with reinforcements rushed in from both sides.

Chumar, where the Indian security forces are at an advantageous position, has seen the worst stand-off in the past four days.

Festive offer

“We have increased the number of security personnel since Monday night. We are being aggressive but this stand-off has to end somehow,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the Chinese side on Tuesday asked for yet another flag meeting, which, according to the Indian side has “not yet been confirmed”.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence remained firm on its stand that “there is no change on ground” either in numerical terms meaning increase or decrease in the build up of troops or in terms of the positioning of the troops.
