John Caulfield hailed super-sub Rob Lehane after his late winner against Limerick kept Cork City’s title hopes alive.

Thanks to Lehane’s strike with 13 minutes to play in Sunday’s win at Thomond Park, the Leesiders are just three points off SSE Airtricity League Premier Division leaders Dundalk with five games remaining.

The sides are due to meet in the final game of the season on 24 October and Caulfield is hoping that they can maintain the pressure on the Lilywhites.

The Cork manager told RTÉ’s Soccer Republic: “Thankfully for us we’ve had a habit of getting late goals over the last number of months. And Rob Lehane, who had been out injured for quite a while, we’ve missed him.

“He’s a great impact sub, he came on and got a goal to win the match, it was fantastic. It puts us a step closer to Europe and keeps a bit of pressure on Dundalk.

“Hopefully we can bring it to the last game of the season. It would be fantastic for the league so hopefully we can do that.

“We’ve a huge match on Friday night against Sligo (live on RTÉ2) but we’re happy to get out of here with three points.”
