Becker College President Among Governor Patrick's Contingent that Traveled Overseas

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WORCESTER, Mass., Sept. 22 -- Becker College issued the following news: Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D., president of Becker College, joined Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick on his recent overseas trip. The mid-September trip included stops in Denmark, France and the United Kingdom.

"Becker College was honored to be part of Governor Patrick's overseas trip," said Dr. Johnson. "This invitation is a testament of the overall excellence of the College's academic programs and our mission of preparing graduates to contribute to a global society. It is also demonstrative of the value and success of Becker's game design program and the Mass Digital Games Institute (MassDiGI), not only in our immediate community, but also as nationally recognized entities that can influence the industry on an international level." Timothy Loew, executive director of MassDiGI, and Monty Sharma, managing director of MassDiGI, also joined Dr. Johnson and Gov. Patrick as part of the 34-member delegation.

"This mission is a tremendous opportunity for us to cultivate new relationships and strengthen existing ones with key global growth centers in Europe to compete for jobs and position Massachusetts as the prime destination for business growth," Patrick said in a statement released by his office prior to the trip.

In April 2011, Becker College was chosen as the site of the Massachusetts Digital Games Institute (MassDiGI), a statewide center for economic development, entrepreneurship and academic cooperation across the Commonwealth's interactive media and game development ecosystem.

Becker's undergraduate video game design program has been top-ranked by The Princeton Review for five consecutive years, and is one of only two institutions in New England, and one of five nationally, to maintain this longstanding distinction. In July 2014, Becker was named as one of the 19 charter members of the Higher Education Video Game Alliance--along with institutions such as Dartmouth College, Drexel University, Duke University, MIT, New York University, Stanford, Vanderbilt University, and Yale.

MassDiGI is considered a leading voice in the Commonwealth's games sector and a model for academic cooperation, entrepreneurship, and economic development. Its programs and activities have had a major impact on the regional interactive media and game development community, and have helped to expand opportunities for many. These programs and activities are designed, by and large, to provide students and early stage entrepreneurs with the resources they need to learn, practice, and launch their products.

Between Sept. 14-19, Gov. Patrick and a group of administration officials and private sector business officials traveled to Copenhagen, Lyon, Paris and London. All three European countries are export partners with Massachusetts. The agenda included visits with government officials, as well as companies and business organizations focused on innovation, clean technology, digital gaming, financial services and education. Gov. Patrick also addressed the Movement of the Enterprises of France and the Parish Chamber of Commerce.
