Asian Games 2014: Unwell lifter Satish Kumar fails to participate

India’s Commonwealth Games gold medal winning weightlifter Sathish Kumar Sivalingam on Tuesday pulled out of the Men’s 77kg competition as he was suffering from a sore throat and fever.

“Sathish did not take part because of sore throat and fever. He took ill the day before yesterday but seemed to have recovered. We were confident of fielding him in the event but on Teusday he again fell sick and was taken to the doctor, who said he could not take part in the competition,” India’s chef-de-mission for the Games, Adille Sumariwalla, told PTI in Incheon.

The 22-year-old Tamil Nadu lifter had created a sensation at the Glasgow CWG, where his pipped his senior K Ravi Kumar to pocket a gold in 77kg competition with a new Games record of 149kg in the snatch division.

He had lifted an overall 328kg, which was more than four times his body weight. He hoisted 179kg in clean and jerk.
