Filmmaker Oliver Stone (JFK, Platoon, Wall Street) reportedly wants Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) to star as controversial figure Edward Snowden in his upcoming film.

According to Deadline, Stone will start shooting the Snowden flick this December in Munich, with the director eyeing Gordon-Levitt for the lead role. Snowden leaked classified information from the NSA last year, with the U.S. government charging him with violating the Espionage Act.

Stone's film, based off the novel Time of the Octopus, will focus on Snowden's interactions with his lawyer to gain asylum in Russia, says Deadline. Stone and producing partner Moritz Borman also acquired the screen rights to The Snowden Files for the upcoming film.

However, Stone and company aren't the only people working on a Snowden film. James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli also are developing a Snowden movie, based off No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA, and the U.S. Surveillance State, by Pulitzer Prize-winner Glenn Greenwald.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was most recently seen in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.
