Silchar: With the byelection process for a couple of assembly segments in Assam’s Cachar district over, the Barak Valley is now gearing up for Durga Puja. The towns and villages of this southern Assam valley are abuzz with preparations for the coming puja.
While Silchar town hosts about 350 Durga pujas, the number across the three districts of Barak Valley —Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi — is nearly 2,500, a source said.

While puja organizers are busy erecting pandals, artists are engaged in giving finishing touches to the idols, braving rain across the region. Shoppers are thronging the markets and malls in large numbers, while the administration is preparing to ensure a smooth, safe and happy puja.
The Cachar district administration and Silchar municipal body, at a meeting on Saturday, reviewed the preparedness of the coming festival which is only nine days away. Additional deputy commissioner (Cachar) and executive officer of Silchar municipal board S N Singh said the administration had already asked the PWD authorities to repair the roads that run through Silchar town. He said most of the roads, lanes and by-lanes are in a deplorable condition. Singh said it has been decided that the repairs on the roads will start from Monday.
The official said noise pollution was another area that would be strictly monitored by the administration during the puja festivity. He said officials of the administration along with the pollution control board would set specific guidelines so that sound systems are used under permissible limits. This will be in force during the immersion of idols as well, Singh said.
Karimganj Police are concerned about the security situation in the district, which shares a long border with Bangladesh, Tripura and Mizoram. “The district has been suffering from a shortage of adequate number of police forces. This is a cause of concern for the police administration during the coming pujas,” said
superintendent of police (Karimganj) Dilip Kumar Dey. He said puja organizers had been requested to arrange sufficient number of volunteers so that they can assist the police in maintaining discipline, law and order during the festive season.
