Officials with STARS Air Ambulance told CTV News Monday afternoon that crews had been called to a serious collision on the Queen Elizabeth 2 highway.
STARS said crews from Edmonton and Calgary were called Monday afternoon to the scene of a crash on the QE2, about 5 kilometres north of Ponoka at Township Road 435.
Officials said crews were called to the scene just before 5 p.m.
“Arriving on scene, members found seven passengers out of the vehicle, being attended by ambulance, fire, as well as some civilians that had stopped to help,” Sgt. Nathan Kardish with the Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit said on the scene.
Two people were rushed to hospital by ground ambulance with serious injuries, two others, including the driver, were airlifted by STARS to hospital in Edmonton, also with serious injuries, and another three suffered minor injuries.
Closures due to the collision were expected to remain in place for several hours Monday evening.
A cause of the crash was not clear Monday evening, police were investigating.
The northbound lanes were closed for about an hour after the crash, the inside lane of the QE2 southbound was expected to remain closed into early Monday evening, Kardish said.
During the closures, drivers were urged to use Highway 2A as a detour.
