Farmers of 15 villages in Greater Noida have threatened a stir beginning next week if they are not exempted from toll on the Yamuna Expressway and DND flyway. In a mahapanchayat held in Raunija village on Sunday, farmers announced the move and said it was unfair that they had to pay for roads that have come up on farmlands they once owned.

Dharam Pal Singh, a farmer leader from Acchepur village, said, “It is not appropriate that toll be charged from farmers on both the Yamuna Expressway and DND flyway as these have come up on farmlands and there is no option but to use these roads for transportation of our goods. The heavy charges, especially on the Yamuna Expressway, throws off the finances of farmers and they feel cheated. Some farmers have even argued that the additional compensation of 64.7 per cent that has been offered should not be accepted until there is either a concession or toll is removed.”

Representatives of 15 villages, such as Mirzapur, Niloni, Ristampur, Raunija, Kheda Mohamaddabad, Tirthali, Rabupura, Bhaipur, Dhanauri, Accheja, Usmanpur, Parsaul, Acchepur, Chandpur and Shahpur, attended the mahapanchayat.

Dhirendra Singh, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson, said, “We will have extended negotiations with both the DND and Yamuna Expressway authorities and if there is no breakthrough, farmers of every single of these villages will begin protests next week.”

Jaypee officials said while anyone was welcome to speak to them, there was no question of any concession or exemption. “This is not a new demand and has been made in the past. Our stand has always been that this demand was not raised when we acquired the land. We have constructed slip roads along the expressway which are free of cost. However, we will speak to the farmers when they approach us to explain our point of view,” a spokesperson said.
