Disagreement on Khazana exhibit

Experts for photo museum in city
Hyderabad: Even before the restoration works are complete, activists are debating on how the Khazana Building should reflect Qutb Shahi history. They are of the opinion that the museum exclusively for Raja Bahadur Deen Dayal, which had been proposed here earlier, should be shifted to somewhere in the city limits. Deen Dayal was the official photographer of the sixth Nizam, who bestowed upon him the title, “King of Photography.”
The Khazana Building Museum is located inside the Golconda Fort. It was built by Ibrahim Qutb Shah (1550-1580). “We received about Rs 50 lakh grant in the 13th Finance Commission, with which we carried out cut-stone carving, granite flooring, plastering and painting works. We will also set up a main gate and signage. There is a proposal to display photographs by Raja Bahadur Deen Dayal,” said Azeem Osman, consultant archaeologist, Department of Archaeology and Museums, Telangana.
As a tribute to Deen Dayal, the building was supposed to house his photographs. A proposal was passed for the same and a budget of Rs 1.5 crore was set aside by the Department in 2008. But owing to shortage of staff, the proposal could not be completed, and the government discontinued the grant.
Mr Safiullah, a renowned heritage expert and managing trustee of the Deccan Heritage Trust, said, “Deen Dayal deserves a proper tribute for his hard work and this photography museum must be set up at Public Gardens or at the State Art Gallery, not at the Khazana Building. Moreover, this building must be used exclusively to showcase the Qutb Shahi heritage.”
