14 Los Angeles-based architecture firms were recently commissioned to design a series of custom cat shelters as part of an Architects for Animals "Giving Shelter" fundraiser.
Designers from studios such as HOK and Perkins + Will worked with wood, faux-grass, bits of carpeting, shingled tubes, metal hoops and concrete boxes to construct a series of feline homes ranging greatly in shape, size, and practicality.
Resembling a cat-sized version of Herzog & de Meuron's German VitraHaus, HOK’s shelter featured a stack of transparent structures housed within a wooden canopy and complete with a mini faux-grass lawn.
Formation Association teamed up with artist Edgar Arceneaux to contribute a wooden tunnel shelter with a continuous rib system and spaces for cats to play and hide.
Other participants in the project included designers from Wolcott Architecture, Abramson Teiger Architects, d3architecture, DSH architecture, Lehrer Architects, NAC architecture, Pfeiffer Partners Architects, RNL, RTKL, Standard Architecture and Design and Space Int'l.
Money raised from the project was donated to FixNation: a Los-Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to minimizing cat populations through humane, non-lethal, methods.
