Varun Gandhi's supporters pelt stones at house of BJP MP who slammed Maneka

Lucknow: The supporters of Varun Gandhi on Monday pelted stones at the house of BJP MP Shyama Charan Gupta, who had criticised Union minister Maneka Gandhi for batting for her son as the Uttar Pradesh chief minister.

The Allahabad MP had on Saturday said, "It is a statement made in haste. She (Mankea) should not have said this. Like her others will also pitch in for their children."

Gupta's statement infuriated Varun's supporters so much so that they also burnt Gupta's effigy in front of his house. "An MP should not use such words and he should apologise as soon as possible, we have burnt his effigy and we will keep condemning if any such incidents happen in the future," Amir Goswami, one of the protestors said.

At a public meeting in Pilibhit last month, the union minister for women and child development had said her son and BJP MP from Sultanpur would be a good chief minister for the state.

She had also accused the ruling Samajwadi Party leadership in Uttar Pradesh of "willfully neglecting" development work, and maintained if Varun Gandhi were to be the chief minister, things would be much better.

Maneka Gandhi had said: "In Uttar Pradesh the government is of Mulayam Singh, whereas in the centre the BJP is in power. Mulayam Singh has wilfully stopped all development work in the state to teach a lesson to people for having voted for the BJP (in Lok Sabha polls)."

She had expressed hope that the BJP will be elected to govern Uttar Pradesh when assembly polls are held in 2017.

"You wait for a year and see how the development of roads, schools and good power supply starts. It will be even better if Varun Gandhi heads the government."
