A large number of activists from the Aam Aadmi Party’s women’s wing on Sunday staged a protest against Laxmi Nagar MLA Vinod Kumar Binny who is accused of spreading rumours about AAP leader Alka Lamba through social media.
Ms. Lamba had on Friday night lodged a complaint against Mr. Binny and 37 others in which she had alleged that Mr. Binny through a Facebook post had claimed that she was running a sex racket at her house. Based on the complaint, a case had been registered at Kotla Mubarkpur police station in South Delhi.
The women activists gathered around Mr. Binny’s East Delhi residence and criticised him for failing to respect women as he “tried to tarnish Ms. Lamba’s reputation by levelling false allegations and spreading rumours”. Demanding strict action on the former AAP member suspended for anti-party activities in January, the activists also raised slogans against him.
Even as this was happening, Mr. Binny told journalists that the post which triggered the whole controversy was made through a fake account and was an attempt to malign him. “Someone had created a fake account on my name and I had informed the Delhi Police in April about it. I sent e-mails to senior police officers as well as Facebook authorities a couple of months later raising the same issue. I have evidence to show that the Delhi Police had assured me of a probe. On September 19, I had also filed a complaint at the Ashok Nagar police station that someone is using my name to post content not authorised by me,” he said.
He condemned the attempts to link Ms. Lamba to sex trade and added that he was ready for any investigations. The AAP rebel, however, added that the party itself could be behind the whole episode as they did not have any other issue left. “It is possible that those from AAP created that facebook profile and posted those things about Ms. Lamba to defame me,” said Mr. Binny.
He also said that he was considering taking a legal recourse and could file a defamation suit against Ms. Lamba and her party.
