Self-finance Kumbh mela, babu tells Nashik civic body

Calling for better coordination on part of all government agencies while preparing for the Kumbh Mela, the principal secretary of the state's urban development department (UDD), Shreekant Singh, said that the Nashik municipal corporation should fund the event on its own, adding that it is the primary responsibility of the municipal corporation to do work for the city.

"Work for the Kumbh Mela is of a permanent nature and is going to benefit the city. Hence the corporation should provide for funds and not cry for them," said Singh. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is 'B' class body and with good income source, the per capital income of the people here is also good, Singh observed.

The principal secretary was in Nashik to review the work under taken in the city for the Kumbh mela. Revenue commissioner of Nashik, Eknath Dawale, made a presentation about the status of work.
More than 1 crore people are expected to visit the city during the Kumbh mela starting form July 2015. The NMC has planned works worth Rs 1,052.61 crore while the district administration has plans for works worth Rs 2,378.78 crore.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of various departments including Sonali Ponkshe, NMC commissioner, Sukhdeo Bankar, CEO Zilla Parishad, Mahesh Patil, Kumbhmela Officer and others.

The Women sadhavi Akhada has demanded that they be given special place and a separate time for the shashi snan – the royal holy bath during the mela. The women akhada had come into existence after the Simhastha Kumbh mela at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.
