Green Drive in Khammam
Khammam: The reduction of forest area in the district due to the transfer of seven mandals to Andhra Pradesh, depleting groundwater sources and declining rainfall every year in Telangana forced the state government to go for greenery in a big way for the next three years.
All the vacant lands in the limits of forest area would be turned green in the next three years. For that, it is planned to set up 200 new nurseries in the district to produce 12 crore saplings during the time.
There are 742 habitations in 39 mandals and one lakh saplings such as red sanders, eucalyptus, teak and bamboo would be planted in each village during the time.
The organisations such as Singareni Collieries Company Limited, Bhadrachalam Paper Boards Limited, Integrated Tribal Develop-ment Authority, District Water Management Authority and horticulture and forest departments would be involved in the process.
The officials of these departments were asked to identify the places to plant the saplings in the next three years. The main task was given to the forest department which has to set up new nurseries to fulfill the target. The forest officials should identify the ‘no-greenery’ places in reserved forest and make it green during the time.
The horticulture department was directed to supply 1.80 crore varieties of saplings such as neem, guava, orange, mango and papaya to the farmers and other agencies in the district to fulfill the task.
