Screening of Tamil documentaries on Sunday

September 21, 2014 11:14 am | Updated 11:16 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Environmental Film Society (EFS) and Vizag Film Society (VFS) will screen Tamil documentary films directed by Madurai-based filmmaker R.P. Amudhan.

‘The Road’, ‘Hey Mr. Gandhi, ‘Leave the Indians Alone!’, and ‘Seruppu’ (footwear) are the three short films that have been listed to be screened as part of the combined initiative.

Announcing this at a press conference on Saturday, representatives of the film societies said the initiative was taken up to rope in as many green activists as possible and help them understand the intricacies of unaddressed social problems that continue to plague our society.

“Since the selected documentary films are based on local issues such as traffic concerns and those related to slum dwellers, the movies with Tamil and English subtitles convey a strong message in a subtle manner,” J.V. Ratnam of Green Climate, which is supporting the event, said.

Career

Mr. Amudhan, who visited the city, said: “With more aspirants evincing keen interest in filmmaking, the demand for the same is increasing. Since the medium can be adopted to interpret different genres, I want to create awareness on how the art can be taken up as a full-time career.”

Free screening of documentary films is being organised at the Builders’ Association hall above Tycoon Hotel on Sunday at 10 a.m.

Former Union Energy Secretary E.A.S. Sarma and Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage coordinator Rani Sarma, along with a team of volunteers, were present.
