September 21, 2014 10:36 am | Updated 10:36 am IST - TIRUCHI:

Traffic on Manaparai-Viralimalai Road was thrown out of gear for about 30 minutes on Monday when a group of agitators staged a road roko with a body.

The protesters hailing from Palaviduthi in Karur district and nearby villages placed the body of T. Ponnar of S. Pudupatty on the road, alleging that the Palaviduthi police were responsible for his death.

They alleged that he was beaten up by the police when he went to lodge a complaint about his missing wife Pappathi.

On information, the Manaparai police rushed there and held a meeting with the protsters.

The protesters ended their agitation only after the Palaviduthi police arrived there. The agitation was withdrawn on assurance that their complaints would be studied.

However, the police said the dead person consumed poison after he returned to his home from the police station.

He died on the way to the Government Hospital in Manaparai.
