Company on track to provide ferry service from Vancouver to Nanaimo

NANAIMO (NEWS1130) – It’s full speed ahead for a company that wants to provide foot passenger ferry service between downtown Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver.

Island Ferry Services is now a couple of steps closer to offering service as early as next spring.

Development and building permits have now been submitted for the ferry’s terminal in Nanaimo, says the company’s Kathleen Burton.

“We’ve got a terminal, parking facilities and moorage for the ships going in.”

A few major hurdles remain, including funding.

“The federal funding that we’re looking for is for the remaining 19 per cent, or about $14 million, of the start-up capital. That would be provided by Infrastructure Canada. That’s money that would go towards building the new terminal and bringing the ships over from Singapore,” says Burton.

To that end, Island Ferry is encouraging people to write letters to BC’s Transportation Minister, who needs to approve of the plans before they get considered by the federal government.

The rest of the project funding is coming from the private sector.
