Triangular fight in GU student union polls
Guwahati: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) will have to put up a stiff fight against the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) to win the Post-graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) election of Gauhati University (GU) on September 26.
For the coveted post of the general secretary, it will be a triangular fight between Aasu, NSUI and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti’s student wing - Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS). Aasu’s Janardan Goswami will contest against Dipjyoti Saikia of NSUI and SMSS’s Subrat Talukdar for the post.
For the post of vice-president, it is going to be a direct fight between Aasu and NSUI. At present, the posts of general secretary and vice-president of PGSU in the university are under Aasu and NSUI respectively.
The student bodies are gearing up to launch election campaigns from Monday evening to draw the attention of 3,000 odd students of the university, who will vote to elect the new PGSU of the university. Buoyed by their success in the student union elections in various colleges affiliated to GU, Aasu is eyeing to sweep the election, said Dipankar Nath of Aasu, who is looking after the activities of the students’ body in the election.
“Aasu will do well in the PGSU election. Besides winning the important portfolios, we are eyeing the posts of general secretary and vice-president,” added Nath.
The SMSS, which has already made its presence felt in the student union election of GU after it was floated two years ago, is putting in all its efforts to ensure victory of its lone candidate Subrata.
The NSUI, which has fielded candidates for all 14 portfolios, is hopeful of winning the important posts. “We have full confidence in our candidates. The NSUI has been raising the burning issues of students in the university and is fighting for developing infrastructure of the university to make it a leading institution in the country. Hope the students will give NSUI a chance to serve the students’ community,” said Isphakul Haque, president of NSUI unit of GU.
The GU authorities are working on a strategy to conduct the elections smoothly. A senior official of the university said election campaigns will start from Monday evening.
