Undue delay in MTech results costing MGU students dearly

There are nearly 4000 MTech seats in colleges under the varsity

KOCHI: The MTech students of Mahatma Gandhi University are a worried lot as their results are delayed by six months to one year for the past two years landing them in a situation where they lose one academic year. In turn this has hit the prospects of the engineering colleges under the varsity with undergraduates opting for MTech admission in colleges in other varsities including those outside the state where the results are promptly declared.

The delay in the results has led to a situation where almost 50 percent of the MTech seats in colleges under the varsity are falling vacant, sources said. There are nearly 4000 MTech seats in colleges under the varsity. “Usually the students pass out of MTech courses in two years, but for the past two-three years, they take one more year forcing the students to languish in wilderness for one
additional year.

Due to this, these days even brilliant students opt for colleges in Tamil Nadu and Karnatka for MTech even though many of those colleges do not have the standards of some of the colleges under MGU,” said an official. The third semester MTech result, declared the other day, was delayed by six months while the assessment procedure of the fourth semester is yet to be completed. According to the official, the main reason for the delay in declaring the results was the lack of adequate staff in the examination wing while several new colleges and courses were sanctioned in recent times. Several existing staff retiring or going on deputation also crippled the system. “There are at least 150 vacancies in the examination wing and unless these vacancies are filled, the results cannot be released on time,” said the official.
