Shunted to NCA
Clearing way for retention of desi coaches, BCCI posts Dawes, Penney in Bangalore.

It is now clear that Sanjay Bangar, R Sridhar and Bharat Arun are not going anywhere. Those going are Joe Dawes and Trevor Penney.

The fielding and bowling coaches of the Indian team, who have been sent on leave during the one-day series against England, have not exactly been told that their services are no longer needed for the Indian team but enough hints have been dropped to them. The two have been told to report at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

Penney, the fielding coach from England, and Dawes, the bowling coach from Australia, have been told by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to start reporting to Brijesh Patel, the director of the National Cricket Academy. They have been given time to October 1 to make up their mind - whether to report at the NCA or make way.

“We will have to see what will be their response. We have informed about their posting at the NCA. Let’s see what is their decision,” a top BCCI official told Mirror. “They are contracted to us for one more year. So we will have to utilise their services.”

Penney, it is understood, is back in England and Dawes is currently with the Kings XI Punjab team which is taking part in the Champions League Twenty20.

Their Bangalore posting is a clear indication that Bangar and Arun (both assistant coaches) and Sridhar (fielding coaches) will continue to stay with the Indian team, at least for the time being. All these postings will formally be approved at the Working Committee in Chennai on September 26.

In the meanwhile, as reported by Mirror recently, Sanjay Patel will meet Ravi Shastri to finalise plans for the World Cup. The BCCI secretary will pick the brains of Shastri and whether he will be interested to stay as the team director till the World Cup. Duncan Fletcher, the chief coach, however, is expected continue till the World Cup.

Selectors for Rajasthan soon

Meanwhile, Patel has revealed that the BCCI will appoint a couple of selectors to pick players from Rajasthan to represent a team of unrepresented. “We have time and again mentioned that we are in favour of the boys playing cricket. The probable solution is to have a team from the unrepresented areas so that the boys from all these problem areas can play,” Patel said.

However, he has expressed helplessness with regard to allowing Rajasthan players representing the RCA. “I am also bound by the BCCI decision of suspending the RCA. So we cannot allow an RCA team to take part,” the BCCI official said.

The inquiry committee that is looking into the RCA issue adjourned the meeting after meeting the officials of the suspended body. Mehmood Abdi questioned the legality of the disciplinary committee, saying it was not constituted at the AGM and the quorum was not sufficient. “Our objection was two-fold. One was the constitution and the second was the quorum which is required to have three members,” Abdi said.

However, Patel refuted the claims. “The committee is constitutionally valid, properly appointed and approved by the AGM. Everything has been done properly. As an honorary secretary, who has attended that meeting, I am telling you that it is a proper committee,” he asserted.

Patel also revealed that grounds in Punjab will be venues for all home matches of J&K.
