Nine held for killing, burying 400 stray dogs

Villupuram police on Friday night booked a panchayat president and eight others for allegedly killing and burying 400 stray dogs near the sea shore in Marakkanam. The dogs were injected with cyanide, cops said.

The cops took action based on a complaint lodged by Dawn Williams, the general manager of Blue Cross, India. The main accused, MA Sekar, is also an AIADMK functionary.

“Initially I didn’t believe. But local social worker Syed Hameed forced me to go and see it for myself. There the local school children confirmed his story,” Dawn Williams said.

The cops said panchayat members had told Hameed that the dogs were being taken for sterilisation a week back. But the dogs were never to be seen again.

The nine have been booked for killing the dogs, making the atmosphere noxious for health among other sections of the Indian Penal Code.
