Nigeria accident: widows seek compensation

September 20, 2014 11:16 am | Updated 11:16 am IST - MADURAI:

Two widows, one from Tirunelveli district and another from Erode, have filed a joint writ petition in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the Centre to pay them compensation for the death of their husbands in an accident in Nigeria on June 3, 2013.

The petitioners, P. Jemima Arumaithai and S. Vijayalakshmi, said their husbands Paul David Dharmendran and Sivakumar respectively were working for a private company in Nigeria. They met with a road accident when they were on the way to an airport in Nigeria in the company vehicle.

After the accident, the bodies were sent to their native places through the Indian embassy in Nigeria. However, the insurance money was not paid despite making several representations through e-mail, thereby making it difficult for them to raise their children. The first petitioner said she also made a representation to the Tirunelveli Collector in this regard and it was forwarded to the Union Home Ministry through the State Home Department. Yet, there was no reply.
