During the federal cabinet meeting on Monday decided to provide Rs25,000 to flood affected families by Eidul Azha.
“Families affected by the floods will be given Rs25,000 by Eid,” Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid said, adding that half of that amount will be provided by the federal government and the other half by the provincial government.
He said the funds will be provided in a transparent manner, as was done during the 2010 floods.
Rashid also said that a survey is underway to assess the amount of damage caused in the wake of the floods, after which the government will provide relief and funding for rebuilding of the damaged caused.

The army has sent five trucks containing 40 tonnes of relief goods, including ration, bedding, utensils, medicines and other essential commodities, for flood victims in the affected areas.
According to an ISPR press release, the army has set up 29 relief goods collection points in major cities, including three in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority has initiated work on assessment of losses in flood-hit areas in collaboration with the United Nations.
Assessments will be carried out in Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Jhang and Multan. The main purpose of the assessment is to identify damages to the infrastructure and rehabilitation of flood victims.
The assessment report will be finalised jointly by NDMA and UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Energy-starved Pakistan relies on a multitude of dams and barrages to prevent Himalayan rivers from flooding and help meet its power needs, but the government's failure to prevent disaster four years running is making some experts question their utility.
Every year since 2010, which saw the worst floods in the country's history, Pakistan has experienced catastrophic inundations that kill hundreds and wipe out millions of acres of prime farmland, harming the heavily agrarian economy.
Starting when the country was still a part of British-ruled India, engineers embarked upon ambitious projects to harness the water that flows from Kashmir through the length of the country to the Arabian Sea.
But a campaign for non-structural measures to contain flooding is gradually gaining ground - with proponents arguing that man-made interventions can, counter-intuitively, exacerbate the floods.
There are two major arguments - the build up of sediment in a dam shortens its useful lifespan, while the slowing of rivers due to structures mean that silt accumulates, decreasing their capacity.

A medium-level flood of less than 400,000 cusecs of water is expected to pass through Sindh’s barrages in the next 24 hours before the water level begins to recede. An estimated 350,000 cusecs of water passed through Guddu Barrage while the water level at Punjnad Barrage receded considerably.
In Punjab, the floods continued to wreak devastation as three children were the latest casualties of the deluge. The children, aged between 7 and 10 years, drowned in Kaiyan Wala in Chiniot, bringing the death toll from Punjab to 246. According to the NDMA, the total national death toll is 323.

According to the NDMA, 323 people have died due to floods in the country, while 569 people have been injured.
Also, FFD Lahore has intimated that according to latest hydrological conditions and breaching of bunds between Qadirabad and Punjnad on River Chenab, the risk of high flood levels in Guddu and Sukkur has decreased significantly.
Water level at Guddu Barrage is increasing due to inflow of flood water from Panjnad, Radio Pakistan reports.
Areas of District Kashmore, Kandkot, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Larkana, Sukkur, Khairpur, Nowsheroferoz and Dadu have been inundated.
Villages in Gotki and Pano Aqil have submerged in water and people have shifted to safety.

Per latest hydrological reports, due to breaches between Qadirabad and Punjad on the Chenab, the risk of a high to very high floods has reduced at Guddu and Sukkur. Hence, authorities now expect a medium to high flood between 400,000 to 500,000 cusecs at Guddu and Sukkur.
Civil administration and the army contingents are carrying out rescue and relief operations in the flood affected areas of Bahawalpur and Muzaffargarh districts.

An estimated 400 villages have been submerged in Alipur district of Punjab and almost 100,000 people displaced within the last 48 hours after the Zameendara dyke was destroyed due to the pressure of floodwater. Meanwhile, an estimated 450,000 cusecs of water will reach Guddu Barrage this morning (Wednesday).

An FIR has been registered against MNA Jamshed Dasti, DPO Muzzafargarh and 200 other people after flood victims protested against breaching of dykes in the Muzaffargarh area, Express News reported.

Army rescue and relief operations continue in flood-hit areas of Multan, Muzaffargarh, Uchsharif, Bahawalpur and Athara Hazari, according to an ISPR press release.
Seven army helicopters have flown for 206 hours since September 5 while 300 boats are also being used in the rescue operations.

As relief efforts continue, the army has shifted 3,000 flood victims to safer places from Multan and Muzaffargarh, Radio Pakistan reported.
Five army helicopters have distributed 15,000 kilogramme of ration to flood victims so far and medical camps have been set up in both the cities.

Tragedy struck a wedding party on Sunday just as the authorities made desperate efforts to save Muzaffargarh city from the flood-swollen Chenab River, eclipsing in part the valiant struggle by civil and military officials to spare residents and their lands from the raging floodwaters.

Breach in Sher Shah dyke fails to serve purpose as water couldn't be cleared and the levels are now rising, Express News reports.
Now it is feared that the flood water may advance towards Muzzaffargarh, where Doaba dyke already has a rising level, which if breached, many areas of the area may be affected.
Meanwhile, NDMA says so far 274 people have perished in the floods with nearly 1.9 million people and 3,000 villages affected with 43,000 houses damaged in 10 districts.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, while being briefed during a cabinet meeting, issued directives to concerned authorities to evaluate the damage caused by the floods and make an estimate as early as possible. He also directed NDMA to take necessary preventive measures to protect the province of Sindh where flood waters are expected to reach in the next few days.
According to latest hydrological conditions, River Indus at Guddu is likely to attain high to very high flood levels ranging between 600,000 to 700,000 cusecs between September 14, 2014 and September 16, 2014.
The floods are expected to reach Sukkur between September 16, 2014, and September 17, 2014. A high to very high flood is expected with levels ranging between 600,000 to 700,000 cusecs.
It is expected that Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Ghotki and Sukkur districts will be inundated.

As floodwaters move downstream through Punjab, Multan and Muzaffargarh are under serious threat of flooding in the next 24 hours, Express News reported.
To save the cities from the swollen Chenab River, explosives have been planted to blow three strategic dykes to divert the floodwater away from Muzaffargarh and Multan.

High level of flood in Chenab and Jhelum rivers has reached Trimmu headworks in Jhang district, Radio Pakistan reported.
According to details the high levels of flood with combined thrust of Chenab, Jhelum and Ravi has reached Trimmu headwork, where the discharge of flood water is continuously being monitored for reducing the impact of floods on population at risk.
On the other hand water level in some areas of Sargodha Division is receding and situation is fully under control. He said a report of crops and property loss is being prepared for the provision of compensation to the flood affectees.
According to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) so far 156 people have lost their lives in Punjab and 64 have died in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in rain and flood related incidents, while 287 people were injured in Punjab and 109 in AJK.
Eleven people have died and five others were injured in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) in rain related incidents.
1,413 houses were partially damaged while 265 were destroyed in Punjab, while number of villages affected is 1,337 with 551,159 people affected. According to NDMA data, total crop area affected by floods was 435,843 acres.
In Azad Kashmir, 3,986 houses were partially while 2,132 have been completely destroyed, with over thirty thousand affected in AJK.
The number of relief camps established in different areas of Punjab is 299, while only two camps were set up in AJK for the affected people.
NDMA has already dispatched 10,000 tents, 31 Boats, 100 Life Jackets to Government of Punjab and 200 tents, 1000 blankets and 3 Rubber Boats to Islamabad Capital Territory. In addition, 3000 tents, 3000 blankets and 1500 plastic mats have been dispatched to SDMA and 275 tents have been provided to GBDMA.
Currently, 12 helicopters and 574 boats are taking part in the rescue operations and approximately 2300 Army troops are taking part in the rescue operations.

Authorities in Jhang district raised alarm on Monday as the water level in Head Trimmu surged in the wake of an unprecedented flow in the Jhelum and Chenab rivers.
The district administration has chalked out a contingency plan to breach the Athara Hazari embankment to save the urban population of Jhang after ordering evacuation of Athara Hazari tehsil which comprises more than 250,000 spread across 260-plus villages.

To dam or not to dam?
"Dam"it ...... do we still need to make a decision about it. It is a no-brainer, with a couple of dams you solve the power crisis, counter the flood problem, increase your agriculture yield and generate much needed economic activity in the country.

This flooding news has become an annual affair. Pakistan needs to do something to mitigate these disasters. I would presume the damages can be minimized with proper planning and water management. It is high time Pakistan stop its obstructionist methods of blocking any dams or infrastructure that India proposes or to come up with wild allegations of stealing waters. Now you have more water than you can handle.

Ah the annual "lets wade through flood waters photo op" These politicians are so dumb.
For most of 2010 floods in Sind Zardari was in France enjoying vacations with his junior rulers. After many days he came and one day walked a few paces in ankle deep flood water the footage of which has been shown by our corrupt friendly media and Wadera Corruption Party propoganda advertising for millions of times.
Now Zardari Junior walked in knee deep mud due to the sticking up of his bullet proof Land Cruiser in mud. Now we will be seeing this footage for the rest of our lives.
Surely, floods will recede know and everyones misery will be eradicated. The level of hypocrisy is unbelievable.
Need to put all of these pretender politicians on an interstellar space craft and blast them off to another uninhabited planet so, they can skrew each other instead of ordinary people.

He is not running the government of Punjab. Mr CM it is mainly your responsibility to provide relief to the victims not anyone else. There used to be floods, loss of lives and property in First Sharif Family Government, Second Sharif Family Government, Third Sharif Family Government, Fourth Sharif Family Government and there are floods, loss of lives and property in Fifth Sharif Family Government. However we can not ask Sharifs why they did not build an infrastructure of darinage and small dams because champions of "democracy" will accuse us of conspiring against "democracy"..

I am happy to see that Pervez Khattak donated 200mil. He's one of the few good guys in Pakistan. In the total 2bil release, Khattak contributed 10%, China contributed 0.71%, US contributed 0.000000%.

The monsoon floods in this part of the world are natural phenomena and its not for the first or the last time that we are having this situation. China has constructed numerous dams but still every year millions are affected by the floods. In Pakistan dams could be build only on western rivers namely Jehlum, Indus and few others in KPK. Pakistan has no control on water in Chenab or Ravi rivers. We must understand that Pakistan is a third world country and having serious financial crunch so government has its limitations but yet it should increase the capacity of the heads/barrages on war footing to contain the losses in the future. I am sure NS will rehabilitate and compensate each and every affected person. Love you NS may Allah help you overcome all these challenges.

It was pathetic to see TV anchor Talat Hussein hosting a TV show today on the floods. He invited Kashmiri separatist leader Ali shah Geelani from Indian Kashmir and Hafeez Syeed from Pakistan. He showered praises on Hafeez Syeed. Geelani wanted India to appeal for International assistance to help Kashmiris as if international community is going to shower aid. International community has not helped flood victims even in AJK. Hafeez Syeed blamed India for the floods in Pakistan when it is known to everyone that it the waters from Pakistan's river Chenab that is causing the floods in Pakistan and India has only one run-off dam on the river which is Baglighar dam that has no storage capacity. Talat Hussein encouraged both to keep telline lies after lies and did not bring out the facts. Good thing that Express Channel fired him. This is the quality of TV anchors, even those who were educated abroad. It is these lies and intentional misleading by many TV anchors and their guests that ultimately causes problems for Pakistan itself and Pakistan becomes a laughing stock in the world community.

To Pakistanis criticizing Nawaz
He maybe a bad PM, I cannot judge. As citizens you all can. But these floods are the worst in 106 years - at least that is what the CM of Jammu and Kashmir is saying on our side. No country can be prepared for that. Also to criticize him for running from pillar to post is absurd. When Zardari had not done that, he was criticized for that.
It is very painful to see the devastations which the floods brought to the poor people. As long as the Govt fails to construct dams on these rivers this type of destruction can not be avoided and these are also necessary to meet the growing demand of power, water for irrigation and drinking.
A national tragedy. We must continue helping our fellow Pakistanis who are suffering.
The devastation brought by the floods is simply indescribable. It brings much grief to read that many homes and lives have been destroyed in these floods. According to various sources, several thousand homes have collapsed and at least 200 people have died in Pakistan. The pictures clearly depict the pain and suffering of all those who have been affected by the floods. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been impacted by the floods. We sincerely hope that they will find the strength to deal with this tragedy.

Is this necessary to have this photo op. of Fatmi and Chinese ambassador holding this huge mock check of 2 million rupees donation which is just about $20,000? This is an insult to those who have been affected by the floods and will also discourage other generous donors.
On another point, these floods now flowing in Pakistan are from waters of Pakistan's Chenab river where India has only a run-off Baglihar dam with no storage capacity. So, Pakistan should not blame India for not giving any warning, etc. The waters from Pakistan's river Jhelum is yet to come down which is going to aggravate the situation. Though Pakistan and India both have adequate warnings, nothing could be done. It will be foolish for Pakistan to blame India for not giving warnings before opening flood gates.
