BOULDER — Two weeks before the annual Boulder Marathon was to have taken place, organizers announced Friday afternoon that the run has been canceled, citing insurmountable “hurdles and challenges” presented by last year’s floods and recent deaths in the local running community.

In an e-mail to runners, race director Jeff Mason wrote that the flood — which also caused the cancellation of last year’s race — “ultimately made it impossible.”

Mason said the flood issues have been compounded by the death of runner Jessica Dillon, a 20-year-old Colorado State University student who collapsed May 4 during the Boulder Spring Half Marathon.

Mason said the cancellation was also motivated by the death of Lesley Kinder, the founder and former director of the Boulder Backroads Marathon, who died in May at 53.
