Porsche Macan Coupe a No-Go, PHEV Still Possible

The 2015 Porsche Macan just went on sale this summer, and while Porsche still has some big plans for its little crossover, a new coupe version won’t be a part of them. What will though is a fourth plug-in hybrid for Porsche as well as GTS and Turbo S models with even sportier intentions than the current offerings.

In speaking with a Porsche spokesmen in Australia, Motoring.com.au is reporting that the Macan will be the next E-Hybrid in Porsche’s lineup using the same system currently found in the Panamera and the all-new 2015 Cayenne. When it arrives, the report says that the Macan E-Hybrid will be powered the same supercharged V-6 and plug-in hybrid powertrain as the larger E-Hybrid models. Porsche has yet to announce the all-electric range for the Cayenne S E-Hybrid, but the Panamera S E-Hybrid can drive 16 zero-emission miles.

After the introduction of what would likely be called the Macan S E-Hybrid, the Porsche spokesmen also said that GTS and Turbo S models are being considering, which would add to the compact SUVs performance abilities. In its current form, the 2015 Macan Turbo is rated at 400 hp and can accelerate from 0-60 in as little as 4.4 seconds. The recently introduced Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS add 15 hp and shave a tenth of a second off their respective 0-60 times.

While Porsche doesn’t mind pushing the performance envelope for small premium utility vehicles, it doesn’t seem to have any desire to chase even smaller niches within the burgeoning segment. This includes chasing BMW, Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz down the rabbit hole that is coupe-looking crossovers like the BMW X4, Range Rover Evoque and the upcoming Mercedes model expected to carry the ML Coupe moniker.
