Real Madrid president Florentino Perez shoveled out $108 million to buy James Rodriguez from French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco over the summer, and here’s what he knew about James:

1. He had a good World Cup.

2. NOTHING ELSE.

He saw James on the showroom floor, sitting pretty after notching six goals and winning the tournament’s Golden Boot award, then bought him at full sticker price without even checking under the hood.

“I don’t know how James plays,” Perez told ESPNFC, defending his club’s off-season moves in the transfer market. “But he had a great World Cup and we wanted him here.”

Continuing to build on an already absurd attack at the expense of a crumbling defense has made Perez the subject of some criticism.

Perez also sold Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich this summer, who might have been the only midfielder on the roster that could really put in a decent tackle.

James was only the latest addition to Madrid’s almost-overrun stable of ridiculous attacking options like Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos, none of which are really known for their defensive capabilities.
