Ahmed Elmohamady is backing record-signing Abel Hernandez to make a major impact at Hull City in his debut season.

Steve Bruce spent around £10million to secure the Uruguay international’s services on transfer deadline day.

His first outing since making a move from Palermo delivered a debut goal, in a 2-2 draw with West Ham United.

Elmohamady saw enough in that performance to suggest that Hernandez is capable of terrorising Premier League defences and providing an instant return on Hull’s sizeable investment.

We're looking to play really good football this season and the new signings will only lift our confidence.

He said: "It was a great header. The finish was class. He got the ball perfectly and he was also unlucky not to score a second (when hitting the bar).

"I thought he also looked fantastic on the ball. He looked assured and wanted to run at the opposition. He went past a lot of them. That is a good sign.

"We've already seen what he can do and what a great player he is. He's a very good international player, he knows how to finish, that's for sure. He looks sharp. He doesn't speak English yet but he will learn.

"The new lads are absolutely class, as you can see from (Mohamed) Diame and Hernandez scoring on their debuts in front of the fans.

"We're looking to play really good football this season and the new signings will only lift our confidence."

Next up for Hernandez and Hull is a trip to Newcastle United on Saturday, a side in turmoil and one Bruce’s men edged out 3-2 in another passionate encounter 12 months ago.

Former Sunderland winger Elmohamaday added: "We're looking forward to the next game, it will be important. We beat them away last year and we're hoping to do the same this year.

"It was a big moment in our season last time. We beat them away and then West Ham at home straight after it, six points from two matches. We can't do that this time but four points would still be good.

"Newcastle is always a tough game. St James' Park is very passionate and the fans really make a lot of noise.

"But we beat them last year and are looking forward to trying to get the three points this year. It would be a big boost for us to do that.

"I enjoy going there, even as a former Sunderland player. I scored there last year and it would be nice to score again this year and help us win."
