Thane surgeon arrested a year after posting patient’s treatment video on YouTube

A 65-year-old orthopaedic surgeon from Thane has been arrested for clandestinely video-recording him administering a spinal injection to his patient, and uploading the footage on YouTube.

The alleged incident took place more than a year ago, and a complaint had been filed at Kalwa Police Station in April, but no FIR had been registered. The complainant, a resident of Virar, wrote to Thane Police Commissioner Vijay Kamble four months ago, and the doctor was only arrested on Wednesday.

Dr Shrikrishna Dhone, who runs the Babasaheb Dhone Orthopaedic Hospital in Thane, has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 406 (breach of trust) and 506 (criminal intimidation), besides the Information Technology Act Section 66 E (violating privacy), following a complaint by a 51-year-old technician, identified as Deepak Joshi. The video had been removed many months ago, but the Kalwa police managed to find a link, even as Dhone was released on bail on Thursday.

According to the complaint, Joshi had approached Dhone around a year ago after he experienced severe pain in spinal cord, and was told that he had developed disc bulge. The complaint said that Dhone assured Joshi that he had, after extensive research, invented a therapy wherein such patients were administered injections to the spine for quick and ever-lasting relief.

In March last year, Joshi visited Dhone’s hospital, where he was asked to remove his trousers, and an injection was administered to his spine, the complaint said. “As soon as I removed my trousers, the doctor’s assistant started clicking my pictures. When I objected, he said it was for the hospital records,” Joshi said in his complaint.

He said that there was no improvement in his condition, but he found his photograph published in a newspaper advertisement issued by Dhone’s hospital, claiming he was cured by the doctor.

“When I confronted him, I also learnt that a video of the procedure had been uploaded on YouTube. I was shamed on social media, my identity had been disclosed. The doctor has made false claims. Despite this, the Kalwa police refused to file an FIR. It was only after I wrote to the Thane police commissioner and submitted the evidence that Dhone was arrested,” Joshi said.

Dhone was not available for comment, while Senior Inspector J V Babar from Kalwa Police Station told his newspaper that the cops will ask the state medical board to verify Dhone’s credentials.
