England's Trish Johnson shot a stunning 65 on Thursday to take the first-round lead at the Tenerife Open de Espana Femenino.

The 48-year-old won her first Ladies European Tour event for four years at the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open last month but followed that up with a poor performance in the The Evian Championship when she missed the cut on 10 over.

And her yo-yo form continued in the Canary Islands as Johnson hit a single bogey and eight birdies, including four in a row from the 12th, to hold a one shot lead over Australian Whitney Hillier.

"I can't really explain it because for the past two weeks I've been rubbish and Evian was embarrassing," Johnson told www.ladieseuropeantour.com.

Putting

"I think it's just a case of when you go to some places you like the greens. Having said that, I did go on the putting green yesterday.

"I saw something playing at Evian, and I can't remember who it was, but I remember thinking 'I like the look of that with the right hand' and I just started to practice it and I felt comfortable straight away.

"I thought, 'This feels really good,' and I putted very well today, so we'll see if it continues."

Scotland's Kylie Walker and South African Stacy Lee Bregman were a further shot back, while England's Charley Hull and Scot Kelsey Macdonald were in a group of seven players who were three shots back.
