People have already started lining up outside the Apple Store on Boylston Street in Boston in anticipation of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus release Friday.

Apple Inc. had more than 4 million advance orders for its new, larger iPhones in the first 24 hours, exceeding its initial supply, the company said Monday. The 4 million orders set a new 24-hour record, beating 2 million orders in 2012 for the iPhone 5, the company said.

A free update to Apple’s iOS software for mobile devices was made available to existing users on Wednesday. The new phones will come with the update, known as iOS 8, which helps unify the phone with other Apple devices like the iPad and Mac computers.
