MIDC to build Balewadi-Hinjewadi road
PUNE: People who travel to Hinjewadi for work every day can hope for some respite from the maddening traffic as the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has decided to construct a new road connecting the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park to the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati sports complex in Mhalunge-Balewadi.
The 6km road will run parallel to the Pune-Mumbai highway and will be 13m wide.

The MIDC would widen the 'kuccha' road that goes around the Balewadi sports complex towards the Nande village.
The two-lane road will benefit all those who travel to the three phases of the IT Park. The road will have an overbridge over the Mula river.
Ajit Relekar, regional officer of MIDC (IT areas), said, "The land acquisition process will start in December and the construction work will follow soon. We are currently working out the terms of negotiation with the farmers who will have to give up their land. It is a linear acquisition and a 'kaccha' road will be widened into a 'pucca' road. The new road will definitely take load off the highway and the Wakad bridge while benefitting people travelling from Katraj, Kothrud and even Baner and Sus."

Farmers parting with their land will be given the option of one-time compensation or floor space index equivalent to surrendered portion of land.
Daily commuters to Hinjewadi have welcomed the announcement, but have expressed hope that it will be worth the wait. Deepak Agarwal, who works with an automobile company, said, "I go from Sus Road to Hinjewadi phase II every day. The travel back home is a nightmare as it takes as much as an hour during peak traffic in the evening. Some of us use the internal roads, which are narrow and riddled with potholes. A new road will definitely help, but we only hope it is of a good quality."
Amey Phatak, who takes the Wakad bridge, said, "An alternative will be great. There is total chaos on the highway-Wakad road. All modes of transport, including buses, two wheelers and cars compete for space as everyone wants to reach the office in time. The new road will hopefully help. It will be better if this route can be used by people coming towards Baner, Sus Road and the Katraj highway. The Wakad bridge can then be used by commuters from Pimple Saudagar and Pimple Nilakh areas."
