ISO New England Board of Directors Elects Slate of Members

ISO New England Inc., operator of the region’s bulk power system and wholesale electricity marketplace, today announced the election of Roberto Denis to the ISO New England Board of Directors. Current ISO Board members Paul Levy and Christopher Wilson were re-elected to serve another term.

“We are pleased that Roberto will be joining the ISO Board,” said Philip Shapiro, ISO New England board chairman. “With more than 40 years’ experience in virtually every facet of the electricity industry—from planning power plants and transmission lines to monitoring the design and development of wholesale electricity markets—Roberto brings extensive knowledge to the Board.” Mr. Denis will officially join the Board on October 1, 2014.

Mr. Denis is an electrical engineer who recently retired as Senior Vice President for NV Energy. Most recently, he was responsible for the company’s Open Access Transmission Tariff, system dispatch and balancing authority operations, compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requirements, and distribution system operations. He also developed and built the One-Nevada Transmission line, a 250-mile, 500-kilovolt transmission line that interconnected separate transmission systems within the state of Nevada, thus creating a single balancing authority for the state.

Prior to his work with NV Energy, Mr. Denis was with Florida Power & Light (FPL), where he began his career and served in various positions for more than 30 years. At the time of his departure, he was the Vice President of Market & Regulatory Affairs for FPL Energy, where he directed state and federal regulatory strategy for the construction and operation of independent power projects throughout the United States. He also analyzed emerging market structures and participated in stakeholder forums within various ISO/RTO footprints including California ISO, Electric Reliability Council of Texas, ISO New England, New York ISO, and the PJM Interconnection. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a registered professional engineer in the State of Florida.

Gordon van Welie, president and CEO of ISO New England, said, “Today’s power grid is undergoing a rapid transition and industry collaboration is critical to ensuring that we can efficiently ensure reliability through wholesale markets. In addition to his wealth of power system knowledge, Roberto’s experience in wholesale markets and stakeholder forums will prove invaluable as ISO New England and its stakeholders work together to tackle the current set of industry challenges.”

Mr. Levy joined the ISO Board in 2006 and is the former president and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Wilson joined the ISO Board in 2011 and has three decades of experience in the financial sector.

As a Regional Transmission Organization, ISO New England elects its board members through a nominating process that involves representatives from the ISO New England Board of Directors, the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL), and the New England Conference of Public Utilities Commissioners. Candidates also receive the endorsement of the NEPOOL Participants Committee. This year’s election represents the tenth year of this collaborative selection process.

ISO New England Board members are subject to the company’s code of conduct that includes a nonaffiliation provision, which means that no officer of the company can have a financial interest in any company participating in New England’s wholesale markets.
