Four Britons nominated for European Athlete of the Year
Mo Farah, Greg Rutherford and Martin Rooney have all been nominated for male European Athlete of the Year while fellow Briton Eilidh Child is among the women's nominees.
The inaugural Golden Tracks trophy will be presented by European Athletics to one of 12 nominees for each gender after voting closes on October 3, although the board of judges are aware that they may receive criticism for their selection criteria.
Preference was given to the athletes who won a gold medal at the European Championships in Zurich in August.
A statement on the European Athletics website concluded: "Some people might argue that athletes with superlative performances to their name, such as 2014 world leaders Piotr Malachowski and Anisya Kirdyapkina, who did not get a continental crown should have also been included; but the essence of elite athletics is to produce your best on the big occasion and beat your rivals.
"The winning athletes will be decided by counting votes from the fans, media, European Athletics Member Federations as well as an expert European Athletics panel, with the results from each group of voters counting for one quarter of the athlete's final score."
Farah's nomination comes after he claimed both the 5000 and 10000 metres titles in Zurich, while long-jumper Rutherford backed up his year-leading distance of 8.51m with gold medals at both the European Championships and Commonwealth Games.
Rooney was the fastest European over 400m this year with a time of 44.71 seconds which landed him the European title in Austria, before he made it a double with Great Britain in the 4x400m relay - running the last leg in 43.93 seconds.
European champion Child is the only British representative in the women's nominations; the 400m-hurdler won at a Diamond League meet in Glasgow with a time of 54.39 seconds last July, before returning to the Scottish city to claim silver at the Commonwealth Games and then going on to secure victory in Zurich.
