American Ballet Theater Starts a YouTube Channel

In line with a growing trend among ballet companies, American Ballet Theater has created its own YouTube channel, the company announced. “With our initial phase of videos, we hoped to give users a sampling of the content,” said a spokeswoman, adding that the channel would be continually refreshed with new material. Most of the videos currently posted date back to May and June.

The current videos show interviews with dancers as well as discussions about preperformance rituals, competition in the ballet world and the need for perseverance in a dancer’s career. There are also behind-the-scenes glimpses of company classes and rehearsals.

The channel aims to “enhance audience experience beyond what they see in the theater,” the spokeswoman said. The videos have already attracted upwards of 3000 views, with individual dancer profiles drawing much higher numbers.
