Carlos Beltran’s wife suffers miscarriage

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Carlos Beltran’s absence from the Yankees since Tuesday has been due to his wife, Jessica, suffering a miscarriage. The couple had been expecting a boy.

“Life took away the blessing of having my first boy,” Beltran wrote in Spanish on his Facebook page. “I believe in God and I am thankful for all his many blessings, like my beautiful family, friends, fans, and career. Everything happens and will happen according to God’s perfect timing and my wife and I accept it that way. Thank you for all the love and messages.”

“I was aware of it. It puts things in perspective,’’ said Derek Jeter, who has communicated with Beltran. “We are here trying to win games but the bottom line is that family is much more important than anything that happens on a baseball field. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, but that’s terrible.’’

Jeter said baseball should be second in Beltran’s life.

“He should take as much time as he needs,’’ the Yankees’ captain said. “I don’t know how much time that will be but he should. I can’t imagine how he feels.’’

Beltran and his wife have two daughters, Ivana and Kiara.
