Close on the heels of the big lead taken by nationalised banks in opening new bank accounts, the Tiruchi District Central Cooperative Bank (TDCCB) has also launched the Jan Dhan Yojana.

N. Mirunalini, Managing Director, TDCCB, told The Hindu on Wednesday that it was aimed at bringing more people under the banking network. Though the TDCCB had opened accounts with zero balance, this was the first time the bank has been opening accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, which was linked with inbuilt accident insurance cover of Rs.1 lakh and RuPay Card. Stating that it had started the project at the TDCCB branch at Pullambadi on Tuesday, she said that instructions had been given to heads of all 62 branches of TDCCB in Karur, Tiruchi, Perambalur, and Ariyalur to give priority for opening new accounts. Since it would benefit the customers, including farmers, the officials were asked to take steps to create awareness among farmers.

Ms. Mirunalini said the TDCCB had incorporated the Core Banking Solution (CBS) on a par with the technological platform of other commercial banks to provide e-services in the hinterland. The customers could receive assistance from government agencies through e-transfer.

K.K. Selvaraj, Managing Director, Tiruchi District Cooperative Union, said consumers can open new accounts by showing Aadhaar card.
