New Delhi: In a bid to reduce child deaths (Infant mortality rate) in India, the government is all set to launch a massive scheme on Thursday. Though India has made a considerable progress on the twin fronts of reducing hunger and child mortality, but still a lot needs to be done.
The government, under the proposed scheme, plans to provide Vitamin K injections to all the new born babies for free. Also, Kangaroo mother care will be provided across the country. It is a method for taking care of pre-term infants which involves infants being carried by the mother, with skin-to-skin contact.
Further, the state governments have been asked to continuously workout a plan to implement this scheme in order to tackle child malnutrition, child and maternal mortality rate, which will gradually show positive results.
According to a UN report released in New York, fewer Indian children under five are dying, with infant mortality rate coming down from 126 per 1,000 in 1990 to 53 last year.
